As he turned onto the long dead end lane, he could see in the distance, two figures in white suits standing by the blue Shelby. Brackington’s car. He wouldn’t ever mistake that one. That dark blue, snake of a car. And his stomach dropped. He’s actually here. His car is here. He’s here. A deep nausea twisted his stomach and suddenly all those thoughts of being a good friend to Smiley and Joe, and about saving them from the same fate he was suffering, vanished from his mind. Vanished like they’d never existed. The idea of facing Brackington like this produced only one thought. RUN, BETTER RUN!

He’d thought that if it were Jenine, maybe he could talk her into letting him have the whole job and letting Smiley off. But Brackington… he wasn’t in it for the money, or anything actually, besides the joy of making other people suffer. He wouldn’t let them go, even if they managed to slip away today. Not now that he’s zeroed in. Hank knew this. He knew from experience, though when you looked into those green eyes, you didn’t need any experience to see to the truth. He just hoped it wasn’t too late to keep Smiley out of any legal trouble. Maybe they could still have an ally in the police, though Smiley would probably laugh at that idea.

Hank had eased his foot off the gas at the sight of Brackignton’s Shelby, but he realized they’d all surely seen his car…
