Karina sat criss-cross applesauce on the carpeted floor of Smiley’s front lobby across from Dievs, also cross-legged. The blanket was still draped over his shoulders, though his coffee had gone cold. Their attentions were both turned to the floor space between them. Karina had drawn out a DIY Ouija board on a piece of yellow construction paper, and was currently humming Break on Through by The Doors in low tones while touching her fingertips to an upside-down shot glass resting on the paper. Dievs was also touching the glass, though he didn’t recognize the song, nor did he really understand what in holy hell was supposed to be happening.
Karina’s eyes were closed, but Diev’s were open, and he was looking at her like she’d lost her cow-tippin mind. He thought maybe she had. Aren’t I the one who was supposed to be strange? Having just risen from the dead and all?…No… I think she’s weirder.
Karina’s eyes sprang open.
“You’re not channeling, Robert. You have to channel your body-spirit connection, otherwise the souls of the damned can’t speak through us. Eh?”
“Well… uh, let me give it another try.”
Dievs closed his eyes and tried to… channel his body-spirit connection. For a moment, he thought it might be working. He felt strange. A tingling sensation wormed its way down from his chest…
